The Tsakonian Archives (Aρχείο Τσακωνιάς) is a cultural institution based in Leonidio, dedicated to the collection, preservation, and promotion of the historical, linguistic, and cultural heritage of Tsakonia (García Chaparro, 2026).
History and Mission
The institution was founded by Stylianos Sp. Merikakis, who served as the Mayor of Leonidio from 1959 to 1978 and chaired the organization from 1954 until his death in 1980. Its mission is the preservation of the unique cultural wealth of the region. The poet and writer Panagiotis P. Pitselas followed him in continuing the institution’s activities (García Chaparro, 2026).
On December 29, 2005, the Academy of Athens awarded a commendation to the institution’s president, Konstantinos Trochanis, in recognition of its 50 years of social, cultural, and scientific contributions (García Chaparro, 2026).
